Fall 2024 opportunities with CSJ

The Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching, and Service (CSJ) announces opportunities for social justice and deep community engagement in Fall 2024. Sign-up forms for these opportunities are available through CSJ’s website csj.georgetown.edu/fall2024. Each interest form includes more detailed information about the program, and most offer Federal Work Study positions. Get engaged as #HoyasForOthers through social justice work including CSJ EngageDC Programs, community service, community-based learning courses, research, spring break trips, and more–for a day, one week, or all semester–here in DC and around the world. Center Operations Team

The CSJ Operations Team supports CSJ EngageDC programs, student organizations, community-based learning courses, engaged research, and racial justice work through “behind-the-scenes” infrastructure and logistics. Additionally, the CSJ Operations Team manages the day-to-day operations of the Hoya Hub food pantry. Hours for each Operations team member are highly flexible and built around that student’s schedule. The Operations team includes opportunities for leadership development. After School Kids Program

Mentor and tutor with the After School Kids (ASK) Program, which serves at-potential young people in the DC metropolitan area through both academic and social-emotional support, with an emphasis on youth justice. ASK offers a supportive team environment and multiple scheduling options during the school day and in the evening (Monday through Friday). Georgetown DC Reads Program

Georgetown DC Reads is a tutoring, mentoring, and advocacy program for K-5 elementary students in DCPS schools and community centers East of the River in DC. DC Reads tutors engage and cultivate students’ interest in reading and improve students’ academic performance in literacy.  DC Reads time commitment ranges from 6-8 hours per week, with multiple scheduling options. DC STEM

Georgetown DC STEM tutors are responsible for leading science, mathematics, engineering, and technology explorations to improve youth’s academic performance in STEM. DC STEM asks for a 6-8 hour time commitment per week. Volunteer and Federal Work Study positions are available. No STEM background is required! DC Schools Project

DC Schools Project (DCSP) is a tutoring, mentoring, and advocacy program that serves youth and adult immigrants of all ages who are designated as newcomer English Language Learners (ELLs). HOME Program

The Center for Social Justice is seeking Student Staff for the Homelessness Outreach | Meals | Education (HOME) Program’s awareness and advocacy efforts and direct services and programming for unhoused individuals in partnership with Georgetown Ministry Center (GMC), Father McKenna Center (FMC), Ward 2 Mutual Aid, Ward 6 Mutual Aid/Serve Your City, and others. Georgetown Jumpstart

Georgetown Jumpstart is an early education organization that aims to prepare preschool children in DC’s under-resourced communities to succeed. Jumpstart utilizes playful learning experiences to develop children’s language, literacy and socio-emotional skills. This program has Federal-Work study and volunteer positions available, and there is a time commitment of 8-10 hours weekly. Upon completion of a 300 hour service requirement, members receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,300. Sign up at https://forms.gle/opVfhrL77SXHwauT9. Alternative Breaks Program

Embark on a transformative social justice journey alongside a close-knit group of 12 Georgetown peers, staff, and faculty through our Alternative Breaks Program. Engage in weekly meetings and a meaningful Spring Break trip in which you will immerse yourself in learning, listening to communities affected by injustice, and discovering pathways for solidarity and action. Our immersive experiences for Fall 2024 – Spring 2025 encompass themes including Worker Justice, Immigrant Justice, Racial and Economic Justice, Environmental and Economic Justice, and Education Justice. Social Innovation and Public Service (SIPS) Fund

The SIPS Fund is a $1.5 million student-run fund that makes strategic investments in Georgetown students and ideas that further our community’s Jesuit tradition of service to others. Since its inception in 2011, SIPS has funded more than $250,000 in student and alumni social ventures. Student Leadership & Training

Are you an upperclass student interested in gaining facilitation skills, learning more about curriculum design, and supporting the learning and development of your peer student leaders? We encourage you to apply for our inaugural Student Leadership & Training Coordinator position. This individual will serve as a co-facilitator for CSJ educational workshops and help create workshops related to leadership, social justice, and our values. Apply using this link. Student Academic Assistants

CSJ Student Academic Assistants (SAAs) commit 4-8 hrs per week to complete organizational and logistical tasks to support faculty on their social justice focused courses and research. While SAAs meet and communicate regularly with their assigned faculty, they report to CSJ’s Director of Engaged Scholarship and Pedagogy, Dr. Fatemeh Hosseini. SAAs will be expected to attend 2-3 meetings during the semester as an entire cohort. Undergraduate students only and must have FWS to apply towards this position. Racial Justice Initiative (RJI) Coordinators

Are you interested in the opportunity to develop knowledge, awareness, and skills to host dialogue spaces for students, by students? We invite you to become an RJI Coordinator to facilitate the Center for Social Justice Critical Conversations on Race dialogue series. The series helps participants to understand how race impacts each person on an individual, group, and systemic level. This role is intended to be a year-long opportunity which requires evening availability between 5:00-8:30pm. Volunteer and FWS positions available. Applications for AY2024-2025 are currently open. UNXD 1130: CBL Social Action

UNXD 1130: CBL Social Action is a 1-credit, pass/fail, online, asynchronous course. Students integrate the course readings and learning material with their own community engagement experience through this 1-credit wrap-around course steeped in reflection. 30-40 hours of community-engaged/social justice work is required to be completed throughout the semester to pass the course. Be a Member of the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice Delegation

Every year the CSJ sends a Hoya delegation to participate in the Ignatian Family Teach-in for Justice (IFTJ). The IFTJ is an annual gathering for 1,600+ members of the Ignatian family (Jesuit institutions and larger church) to come together in the context of social justice and solidarity to learn, reflect, pray, network, and advocate in a community that sees faith and justice integrally linked. This year the IFTJ is happening in-person at the Washington Hilton on Saturday, October 26 and Sunday, October 27; check out the IFTJ webpage.
