The Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching, and Service (CSJ) announces opportunities for social justice and deep community engagement in Fall 2023. Sign-up forms for these opportunities are available through CSJ’s website csj.georgetown.edu/spring2024. Each interest form includes more detailed information about the program, and most offer Federal Work Study positions. Mentor and tutor with the After School Kids (ASK) Program, which serves at-potential young people in the DC metropolitan area through both academic and social-emotional support, with an emphasis on youth justice. ASK offers a supportive team environment and multiple scheduling options during the school day and in the evening (Monday through Thursday). Georgetown DC Reads is a tutoring, mentoring, and advocacy program for elementary students who are a grade level or more behind in literacy skills in DCPS schools and community centers East of the River in DC. Georgetown DC STEM tutors are responsible for leading science, mathematics, engineering, and technology explorations to improve youth’s academic performance in STEM. DC STEM asks for a 6-8 hour time commitment per week. Volunteer and Federal Work Study positions are available. No STEM background is required! First-Year Orientation to Community Involvement
Interested in applying for a leadership position with the First-Year Orientation to Community Involvement (FOCI) for the 2024 program? FOCI is CSJ’s pre-orientation program for incoming first-year and transfer students. The program invites students into service, social justice activism, community-building and engagement in DC and at Georgetown.
The Leader Team will mentor and guide the students as they engage in meaningful community service; discover and reflect on the diverse perspectives and roles of people in the Georgetown and Washington, DC communities; develop the capacity for leadership; and become part of a community committed to personal growth through social justice. Leaders will participate in and facilitate difficult conversations to advance antiracism, approach solidarity, understand privilege, and build skills and grow to advance social justice.
Undergraduate students may volunteer for these positions or apply their FWS Awards. Eight to ten of the 12-14 Leader Team positions will include summer housing (see details in the application at https://forms.gle/XhCsaaQjmRk7qpRNA). Georgetown Jumpstart is an early education organization that aims to prepare preschool children in DC’s under-resourced communities to succeed. Jumpstart utilizes playful learning experiences to develop children’s language, literacy and socio-emotional skills. This program has Federal-Work study and volunteer positions available, and there is a time commitment of 8-10 hours weekly. Upon completion of a 300 hour service requirement, members receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,300. Sign up at https://forms.gle/opVfhrL77SXHwauT9. Take a deep dive into social justice and solidarity with a group of 12 Georgetown students, staff, and faculty on one of our immersions. Through weekly meetings and a Spring Break trip, you’ll have the opportunity to learn with peers, hear from people and partners most impacted by injustice, and discern how to take action for justice. Our trips for the 2023-2024 AY are: Worker’s Justice (Washington, DC), Immigrant Justice (Arizona, US-Mexico Border), Racial and Economic Justice (Detroit, MI), Environmental and Economic Justice (Harlan, KY), Environmental and Worker Justice (Morganton, NC). Submit your ideas for funding to the Social Innovation and Public Service (SIPS) Fund!
The SIPS Fund is a $1.5 million student-run fund that makes strategic investments in Georgetown students and ideas that further our community’s Jesuit tradition of service to others. Since its inception in 2011, SIPS has funded more than $250,000 in student and alumni social ventures. CSJ Student Academic Assistants (SAAs) commit 4-8 hrs per week to complete organizational and logistical tasks to support faculty on their social justice focused courses and research. While SAAs meet and communicate regularly with faculty, they report to CSJ’s Director of Engaged Scholarship and Pedagogy, Dr. Fatemeh Hosseini. Racial Justice Initiative (RJI) Coordinators
Are you interested in the opportunity to develop knowledge, awareness, and skills to host dialogue spaces for students, by students? We invite you to express interest in becoming an RJI Coordinator to facilitate the Center for Social Justice Critical Conversations on Race dialogue series. The series helps participants to understand how race impacts each person on an individual, group, and systemic level. This role is intended to be a year-long opportunity. UNXD 130: CBL Social Action is a 1-credit, pass/fail, online, asynchronous course. Students integrate their studies with their own community engagement experience through this 1-credit wrap-around steeped in reflection. 30-40 hours of community-engaged/social justice work is required to be completed throughout the semester.
