Spring 2025 Opportunities for Engagement

The Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching, and Service (CSJ) announces opportunities for social justice and deep community engagement in Spring 2025. Sign-up forms for these opportunities are available through CSJ’s website csj.georgetown.edu/Spring2025. Each interest form includes more detailed information about the program, and most offer Federal Work Study positions. Get engaged as #HoyasForOthers through social justice work including CSJ EngageDC Programs, community service, community-based learning courses, research, spring break trips, and more–for a day, one week, or all semester–here in DC and around the world. After School Kids Program
Mentor and tutor with the After School Kids (ASK) Program, which serves at-promise young people in the DC metropolitan area through both academic and social-emotional support, with an emphasis on youth justice. ASK offers a supportive team environment and multiple scheduling options during the school day and in the evening (Monday through Friday). Georgetown DC Reads Program
Georgetown DC Reads is a tutoring, mentoring, and advocacy program for K-5 elementary students in DCPS schools and community centers East of the River in DC. DC Reads tutors engage and cultivate students’ interest in reading and improve students’ academic performance in literacy. DC Reads time commitment ranges from 6-8 hours per week, with multiple scheduling options. Volunteer and Federal Work positions available. Sign up at https://forms.gle/M8sGnet9rrzYczFG8. DC STEM
Georgetown DC STEM tutors are responsible for leading science, mathematics, engineering, and technology explorations to improve youth’s academic performance in STEM. DC STEM asks for a 6-8 hour time commitment per week. Volunteer and Federal Work Study positions are available. No STEM background is required! DC Schools Project
DC Schools Project (DCSP) is a tutoring, mentoring, and advocacy program that serves youth and adult immigrants of all ages who are designated as newcomer English Language Learners (ELLs). Alternative Breaks Program
Embark on a transformative journey with the Alternative Breaks Program (ABP), where you’ll join a close-knit group of Georgetown peers, staff, and faculty to explore critical social issues and build meaningful connections with communities. Through weekly meetings and an immersive Spring Break experience, participants delve into themes such as immigrant rights, economic equity, environmental advocacy, community resilience, rural health, carceral systems, and the intersection of art and activism, spanning locations like Arizona, the U.S. South, Appalachia, Detroit, and New York City. Apply to serve as a student co-leader or program coordinator by the priority deadline of May 1, 2024, with interviews scheduled for May 20–23. Social Innovation and Public Service (SIPS) Fund
The SIPS Fund is a $1.5 million student-run fund that makes strategic investments in Georgetown students and ideas that further our community’s Jesuit tradition of service to others. Since its inception in 2011, SIPS has funded more than $250,000 in student and alumni social ventures. Student Academic Assistants
CSJ Student Academic Assistants (SAAs) commit 4-8 hrs per week to complete organizational and logistical tasks to support faculty on their social justice focused courses and research. While SAAs meet and communicate regularly with their assigned faculty, they report to CSJ’s Director of Engaged Scholarship and Pedagogy, Dr. Fatemeh Hosseini. SAAs will be expected to attend 2-3 meetings during the semester as an entire cohort. Undergraduate students only and must have FWS to apply towards this position. Racial Justice Initiative (RJI) Coordinators
Are you interested in the opportunity to develop knowledge, awareness, and skills to host dialogue spaces for students, by students? We invite you to become an RJI Coordinator to facilitate the Center for Social Justice Critical Conversations on Race dialogue series. The series helps participants to understand how race impacts each person on an individual, group, and systemic level. This role requires evening availability between 5:00-8:30pm. Volunteer and FWS positions available. Applications for AY2024-2025 are currently open; please complete the application by December 5, 2024. UNXD 1130: CBL Social Action
UNXD 1130: CBL Social Action is a 1-credit, pass/fail, online, asynchronous course. Students integrate the course readings and learning material with their own community engagement experience through this 1-credit wrap-around course steeped in reflection. 30-40 hours of community-engaged/social justice work is required to be completed throughout the semester to pass the course. Climate and Environmental Justice (CEJ) 
Are you seeking to learn more about various approaches to climate and environmental justice (CEJ), particularly approaches that center the frameworks of those most impacted by the climate crisis? We encourage you to apply to the Center for Social Justice’s pilot climate and environmental justice program. In this program, you will have the opportunity to learn about anti-colonial approaches to sustainability, community-engaged environmental justice work, and the many intersections of climate justice. You will also have the chance to support meaningful projects towards the infusion of CEJ principles across the CSJ’s programming, while working with local environmentally engaged community partners. Immigrant Justice (IJI) Advocacy Coordinators
Passionate about immigrant justice and want to do more to act in solidarity with working class immigrant communities in DC? Consider applying to be an Immigrant Justice Advocacy Coordinator! IJI Advocacy Coordinators will lead efforts to mobilize resources, implement political education initiatives, and work in community with local migrant justice organizations to fight for and alongside immigrant communities in DC. Immigrant Justice Advocacy Team members will be engaging in opportunities to gain professional and practical skills in activism, community organizing, case advocacy, and advocacy teamwork. The program emphasizes developing frameworks and practice rooted in social justice, critical consciousness-raising, and centering community as it connects at various intersections of immigration/migration. First-Year Orientation to Community Involvement (FOCI)
The Center for Social Justice invites current Georgetown undergraduate students to serve in the FOCI 2025 Leader Team. The Leader Team will mentor and guide the students as they engage in meaningful community service; discover and reflect on the diverse perspectives and roles of people in the Georgetown and Washington, DC communities; develop the capacity for leadership; and become part of a community committed to personal growth through social justice. Leaders will participate in and facilitate difficult conversations to advance antiracism, approach solidarity, understand privilege, and build skills and grow to advance social justice.
