The Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching & Service (CSJ) announces part-time and full-time opportunities for social justice work and deep community engagement in Summer 2024. These programs are in response to requests from community partners and DC families. The sign-up forms or applications for these opportunities are available at csj.georgetown.edu/summer. Each sign-up form and application includes more detailed information about the program, including more information about summer awards, FWS, volunteer, and summer housing, if applicable. After School Kids Program – Summer
Mentor and tutor with the After School Kids (ASK) Program, which serves youth in the DC metropolitan area through both academic and social-emotional support. ASK offers a supportive team environment with multiple scheduling options, Mondays through Fridays. Find additional information about ASK and sign up here. ASK40 Summer
Serve in-person this summer with the After School Kids (ASK) Program’s ASK40 position. In this position, students will participate in youth-justice initiatives that specifically affect youth in the DC metropolitan area. This position is ~30-40 hours/week during the summer. Center Operations Team – Summer
The Center Operations Team interns are the backbone that support CSJ’s social justice programming and engaged scholarship. The team supports operations, including acting as the first point of contact for visitors and callers to the Center for Social Justice, coordinating CSJ van fleet operations, and advancing projects-based tasks and assignments. Center Operations Team interns support staff research, facilitate operations, and create a welcoming environment in the Center. This position is Federal Work Study only and includes summer housing. DC Schools Project – Summer
DC Schools Project (DCSP) is a tutoring, mentoring, and advocacy program that will serve middle school-aged newcomer English Language Learners (ELLs) this summer. DCSP offers multiple day options to fit with your schedule. You do not have to speak another language to tutor with us! Join us today in Volunteer and Federal Work positions. Sign up to tutor here. Georgetown Jumpstart – Summer
Jumpstart works with underserved preschool children to develop language and literacy skills that youth need to be ready for kindergarten success. Over the summer Jumpstart corps members have the opportunity to serve in a 35-40 hour per week, immersive classroom experience. This program begins with two weeks of training, followed by seven weeks of programming, during which students split their time between working in the daytime classroom under the supervision of professional teachers, preparing for sessions individually and with their team, and implementing sessions. Federal Work Study and volunteer positions are available. Upon completion of the program, all members receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,252.92 to be applied towards educational expenses. Summer housing is available with Jumpstart positions. Summer Education Equity Development (SEED) Internship
As a SEED (Summer Education Equity Development) Intern you will play a key role in advancing the Education Equity work of the CSJ. The Interns will work closely with the Assistant Director of Educational Equity to learn more about the educational inequities that exist within Washington DC and to sow positive seeds of change by working on impactful projects, connecting with local education organization and advocates, and contribute to current CSJ Educational Equity initiatives. Summer High School Program: Bridges to Social Justice Academy
CSJ is seeking mentors to serve in its Bridges to Social Justice Academy for high school students through the Georgetown Summer High School Sessions. This 2-Week Academy serves as a deep introduction to the multiple pathways that one can take toward the creation of a more just and humane world. Grounded in both the Social Change Model of Leadership Development and the Pathways of Public Service and Civic Engagement framework, this academy will provide high school students with content and context to support their transdisciplinary understanding of the injustices and structural oppression perpetuating harm in our society. High school students will learn about the intersecting and necessary ways to create social change through community-engaged research; community organizing and activism; direct service; decolonial philanthropy; advocacy for public policy; and social entrepreneurship for the common good. GU students will serve as mentors to 50-60 high school students from around the world. Program training begins on June 5 and the position runs through at least July 21, 2024. Summer Immigrant Rights and Advocacy (SIRA) Program
In partnership with local/grassroots migrant justice organizations and DC Public Schools, summer interns will be working with im/migrant families on issues related to education and im/migrant justice advocacy. The interns may also be providing both direct services and support including but not limited to ELL tutoring for children and families, supporting summer asylum application clinics for migrants, driving families, or other programming as necessary and requested by community partners. Time commitment is approximately ~35-40 hours/week with periodic weekend commitments.
Minimum requirements:
- Advanced/Bilingual Spanish fluency
- Exposure/experience with issues of im/migration and education
- Demonstrated interest in learning about intersections of race, class, immigration, and education
- Demonstrated interest in working with immigrant communities
- Flexibility and initiative — we will be centering community needs and voices which may require adapting and readjusting how we respond to those needs.

UNXD 1030-130: CBL Intersections of Social Justice (1-credit, pass/fail online asynchronous course)
Intersections is an online course designed to wrap around your summer internship, employment, or volunteer commitments with reflection and skills-building. It invites you to ask and consider ethical questions and to apply social justice theories to contemporary world issues in various work settings. During the summer cross-section term (June 3 – July 26), you earn 1 credit pass/fail for approximately 3-5 hours of online engagement per week. To enroll, students submit an interest form. Scholarship is available; students are encouraged to express their interest early. UNXD courses are approved for elective credit in undergraduate schools. Contact csjcbl@georgetown.edu with questions.
