Father McKenna Center
The Center for Social Justice partners with Campus Ministry and their variety of student groups to provide volunteer opportunities for students at the Father McKenna Center. The Father McKenna Center’s Mission is “to accompany and care for families struggling with poverty and men facing homelessness by providing food, shelter, clothing and services to support their journey toward stability, productivity, meaning and hope, building upon the good works, ideals and values of Father Horace McKenna, S.J.” Volunteers aid with FMC’s mission and accompany individuals experiencing homelessness.
As a Father McKenna Center volunteer you will, most importantly, promote dignity and provide a warm and welcoming presence to the guests who visit. You will do this through serving breakfast, sorting donations, helping cook lunch, stocking the food pantry, and a variety of other tasks that Father McKenna Center needs. Volunteering at Father McKenna Center ensures continuity of service to the individuals experiencing homelessness who rely on the McKenna Center.
Logistics: Groups leave campus at 7:00am in a CSJ van from the front gates and return at 10:30am. Transportation is provided both to and from campus. All necessary orientation, instruction and reflection will occur at the Father McKenna Center on the day of volunteering. Please wear closed-toe shoes, long pants, and if possible, bring a hat. Hats are required at FMC, so either bring you own or plan on borrowing one of FMC’s.
