Annual Awards

Each year the Center for Social Justice spotlights the past year’s work by students, community members, faculty, staff and campus partners, while also looking forward to the continued commitment to service and engagement in our communities. Numerous awards are presented to individuals, groups, and partners based on peer and CSJ staff nomination and announced here and on CSJ’s Instagram feed.

Questions can be directed to CSJ’s Executive Director, Dr. Andria Wisler.

Bridge Builder Award: Outstanding Community Partner

The Bridge Builder Award: Outstanding Community Partner recognizes a community partner who shares a common vision with the CSJ to advance social justice. Our work together embodies ongoing, collaborative opportunities for community-based research, teaching, and service, allowing all participants to be agents of positive change and social justice.

Commitment to Social Justice in Action Award: Campus Partner

(Formerly Known As – Bridge Builder Award: Outstanding Campus Partner)

The Bridge Builder Award: Outstanding Campus Partner is given to a campus partner who has supported and advocated for CSJ’s work on Georgetown’s campus and/or in the greater DC community, exhibiting a strong commitment to social change and helping to build bridges between CSJ and the broader community.

Professor James Slevin Engaged Scholarship Award

The Professor James Slevin Engaged Scholarship Award recognizes a community-based learning (CBL) course, co-curricular pedagogical initiative, or research project that successfully integrates learning objectives with community collaboration and solidarity while promoting student engagement with fundamental social justice issues and uplifting community voices. This award recognizes Professor James Slevin, who passed away in 2006. Professor Slevin was a faculty member of the English department, directed the Program on Justice and Peace, and was the inaugural Director of the Office of Curriculum and Pedagogy at the CSJ.

Suzanne Tarlov Spirit Award

The Suzanne Tarlov Spirit Award recognizes a student who has demonstrated a strong understanding of and commitment to social justice by working behind the scenes to create successful CSJ programming and/or events. This award is given in honor of Suzanne Tarlov, who served as the inaugural Associate Director of the Center for Social Justice until she passed away in January 2012. Suzanne’s commitment to the Georgetown University community and CSJ’s community partners was evident in her everyday actions and the depth of her relationships.

Commitment to Advocacy: Indirect Service-Led Organization Award

This award recognizes the outstanding work of a student-led organization that has shown significant commitment to and advocacy for a cause that “advances justice and the common good.” CSJ staff-run EngageDCorps programs are not eligible for this award.

Leadership Beyond the Gates: Direct Service Student-Led Organization Award

This award recognizes the outstanding work of a student-led organization that has made significant direct service contributions in the Washington DC community to “advance justice and the common good.” CSJ staff-run EngageDCorps programs are not eligible for this award.

Lisa Burgoa (SFS’19) Award

The Lisa Burgoa Award recognizes a student who exemplifies “advancing social justice and the common good.” The award is given in honor of Lisa Burgoa (SFS’19), who left an indelible mark on the DC Schools Project and the CSJ community during her four years of service. Throughout her commitments, she modeled for other students what the true work of social justice is: interrogating larger issues of injustice while being rooted in solidarity with and service to the community.

Campus Compact Newman Civic Action Fellowship
