Immigrant Justice Initiatives (IJI)

Program History

The Immigrant Justice Initiatives Advocacy Program (IJIA) was borne out of the DC Schools Project’s Advocacy Committee. The program sought to focus specifically on im/migrant justice advocacy in response to the bussing of migrant families from Texas and Arizona in April 2022.

Since Fall 2023, the Im/migrant Justice Advocacy Team has been serving and continues to serve DC’s low-income newcomer im/migrant youth and their families in partnership with local grassroots migrant justice and mutual aid organizations. 

Our Model

Our model for the advocacy program focuses on centering community knowledge and community voices, and responding to the voiced needs of those closest to directly impacted people and directly impacted people themselves. We focus on contributing to existing work and efforts through our partnership with grassroots migrant justice collectives and networks. 

We have 5 program teams under IJI: 

• Accompaniment 
• Community Canvassing 
• Education and Outreach 
• Know Your Rights and Family Safety Planning 
• Youth Community Leadership Development 

Each program team responds to a specific aspect of voiced need from our partners.

Immigrant Justice (IJI) Advocacy Coordinators

The Immigrant Justice Advocacy Coordinator will be engaging in opportunities to gain professional and practical skills in community organizing, coalition building, case advocacy, and advocacy teamwork. The program emphasizes developing frameworks and practice rooted in social justice, solidarity, critical consciousness-raising, and centering community as it connects at various intersections of immigration/migration. Immigrant Justice (IJI) Advocacy Team

The IJI Advocacy Team works with IJI Advocacy Coordinators engaging in various projects across our five advocacy program teams as solidarity in practice. Immigrant Justice Advocacy Team members will be engaging in opportunities to gain professional and practical skills in activism, community outreach, case advocacy, and advocacy teamwork. The program emphasizes developing frameworks and practices rooted in social justice, solidarity, critical consciousness-raising, and centering community as it connects at various intersections of immigration/migration.
