CSJ Student Academic Assistants
Program Overview
CSJ’s Student Academic Assistants (SAAs) support social justice, community-engaged, and community-based learning courses and research taught and led by CSJ-affiliated faculty. Each SAA will be paired with a CSJ-affiliated faculty from across campus.
When supporting a faculty member’s course, SAAs complete organizational and logistical tasks to support the course professor, students, and community partners, including but not limited to: entering and organizing course data (e.g. receipts, service hours worked), sending email and text reminders to students, and professionally communicating with community partners via phone and email. SAAs may also support the academic and reflective components of the course. SAAs are invited to sit-in on at least one class session a week, and can count this time toward their work hours.
When supporting faculty research and/or an academic project, SAAs may complete a range of activities, tasks, and responsibilities depending on the context of the project. SAAs will determine in consultation with their supervising professor if they will work in-person, virtually, or a hybrid with their professor.
The program brings together the SAA cohort three times during the semester to reflect on their work supporting community-engaged scholarship and learning, to connect with various community experts across the area, and to build a network of inclusive learners and researchers.
Requirements for Students
- Undergraduate students must be Federal Work Study eligible and must allocate their Federal Work Award to the SAA position. The pay rate is $17.50/hr. SAAs typically work 4-8 hours/week during the spring 2025 semester.
- The student must be in good academic standing, enrolled in courses, and reside in the DMV area.
- While SAAs actively support and regularly communicate with their assigned faculty members during the semester, they report to Dr. Fatemeh Hosseini, Director of Engaged Scholarship and Pedagogy at the Center for Social Justice.
- Note: SAAs will be expected to meet, in person, three times during the course of the spring 2025 semester as an entire cohort. The sessions will serve as community and professional development opportunities among the SAA cohort. Attending the sessions will serve as a requirement for continuing as an SAA in fall 2025.
